The PG program in Nursing at VMU prepares the candidates to function in a leadership position in select areas of clinical speciality, nursing education, nursing administration and nursing research and to carry out independent research studies and function as guides for research students. The nursing programs offered at VMU are supported with full-fledged medical college hospitals in each of the three locations where the program is offered.

The aim of the PG program in nursing is to prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as nurse specialist, consultants, educators and administrators in a wide variety of professional settings. This programme provides the basis for the post-masteral program in nursing. The program encourages accountability and commitment to life-long learning which fosters the improvement of quality care.

Objectives

On completion of the two year M.Sc. (N) program, the graduate will be able to perform the following:-

- Utilize/ apply the concepts, theories and principles of nursing science.
- Demonstrate advanced competence in the practice of nursing.
- Practice as a nurse specialist.
- Demonstrate leadership qualities and function effectively as a nurse educator and manager.
- Demonstrate skill in conducting nursing research, interpreting and utilizing the findings from health related research.
- Demonstrate the ability to plan and effect change in nursing practice and in the health care delivery system
- Establish collaborative relationship with members of other disciplines.
- Demonstrate interest in continued learning for personal and professional advancement.

Specializations Offered:

There are five specializations in the M.Sc. Nursing program.

• Medical and Surgical Nursing
• Child Health Nursing
• Mental Health Nursing
• Community Health Nursing
• Obstetrics and Gynaecology Nursing

Further, there are sub-specializations in Medical Surgical Nursing such as:-

• Critical Care Nursing
• Oncology Nursing
• Neuro Sciences Nursing
• Nephro–Urology Nursing
• Orthopedic Nursing
• Gastroenterology Nursing
